A world where everything is made of paper

Imagine a world where everything is made of paper - well the project is progressing, but as I am working on a small scale, it is taking quite a bit of planning, experimentation and modelling.

I've based the flowers that I am making on the flowers I see on my walk in the fields, rather than random choices.  So, hopefully, my sculpture will have poppies, daisies, teasels, and some others yet to be decided.   Here are some of the flowers so far

The smallest flowers are about 1.5cm square, the poppies and teasels are about 3cm square. So there are lots of tweezer work involved and I'm using a scalpel rather than scissors.  Still lots more to do!

What is a sketchbook journal?

"As the name suggests, it is a book, usually bound, containing both sketches and bits of personal history and observations.  More than a diary of written words, it is an outlet for visual expression and artistic creativity.  Where words leave off, the sketchbook journal awakens the mind with shapes, colours and textures, all seen through the eye of the recorder and preserved in his own personal style."  These are the words of Claudia Nice, whose book I bought many years ago, entitled "How to Keep a Sketchbook Journal."

I've revisited the book in the last few months as a requirement of the Art Foundation course is that you keep lots of these.

As this is a learning experience, there will be some good drawings and observations and some not so good, however, I thought I would share them on my blog - yes, I mean all of them.  So, I've set up a separate page to keep all the pages together - you'll see the tab "sketchbook/journal" at the top of the page somewhere, when I find where to put it!

The Book Sculptures of Su Blackwell

I found this artist when I was carrying out research for the altered art book.  I found this whole world of art fascinating, but Su Blackwell has created a magical world from old books that just sent my emotions and imagination into overdrive.

Su's work has a very ethereal and enchanting feel to it.

I hope you enjoy this as much as me.   It has given me such inspiration for my own book.  Click on the Su Blackwell link to see more of her work.

What's in a name?

Today, I have changed my profile name to my real name. When I started this blog, I adopted my middle name as my profile name but I'd like to use my real name to connect all my future art work to me!  So, just in case you notice, I thought you deserved an explanation

Where has all the broccoli gone?

We are having a great crop from the garden this year; lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions, mange tout, beetroot, carrots, potatoes and pak choi.  I was really looking forward to some broccoli but we had some guests get there first!

Spot the Broccoli leaves!!!
